Handwritten Books by Gertrude Scudder 1915
History
This archive came to me as a group. It includes four course notebooks and two bluebooks. The covers of the notebooks are in rough shape, but the contents are in good condition and very legible. They all date between 1913 and 1915.
The Images
The covers of the books are available here, plus a little bit of a description for each.
- American History Notes (c. 1910)
- Inside front cover inscription: "Gertrude Scudder. H.S.A. American Hist. &
Literature Notes."
- Title page: "American History Notes, Gertrude Scudder, H.S.A."
- The notebook is only partially filled from the front. Most of the pages in the notebook are blank.
- The notebook is also has entries starting on the back page; these are the reference books for the class, and notes about famous people.
- At the end of the back entries, there are four sheets of papers folded into quarters and filed between the pages. They are biographical notes on people from the Civil War era (Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglass, and Henry Clay).
- Three more sheets are folded into quarters and filed in the blank portion of the notebook. These sheets are notes on electricity.
- 19th Century Prose (c. 1911)
- Front cover label: "Mt. Holyoke College / 19th Cent. Prose / Gertrude Scudder"
- Signed by Martha B. Weeden 1913 inside the front cover, but the handwriting does not look like it matches the writing in the text of the notebook
- Title page: "Reading Notes in Later 19th Cent. Prose."
- About halfway through the book, another title page: "Miss Harper's Lectures"
- Signed by Martha Weeden upside down inside the back cover
- Mediaeval History (1911-1912)
- Front cover label: "Mediaeval History / (with Miss Morriss) 1st & 2nd Sems of Freshman Year / 1911-1912 / Gertrude Scudder"
- Inside front cover inscription: "Freeman's Method of Historical Study / Chap. 4 - p. 156-178." Also a repeating doodle of the number 3894.
- Inside back cover inscription: "Gertrude Scudder / History III (5)" Also a few notes in pencil: the definition of the word escheat, and some thoughts about 11th century church
- Old Testament History (1912-1913)
- Front cover label: "Old Testament History - 1st Sem / Study of the Prophets - 2nd Sem. / (with Miss Lilla Morse) / (now married) / 1st & 2nd Sems of Soph Year / 1912-1913 / Gertrude Scudder"
- Inscription inside front cover: "Bible I (Miss Morse - Box 23) / Gertrude Scudder / 43 Pearsons" and "Gertrude Scudder / Bible I"
- Eight small memo-sized sheets of paper are laid inside about 1/3 of the way into the text block of the notebook. They appear to be notes on important dates to remember, such as when the books of Hosea and Isaiah were written.
- A blank sheet of paper is folded in half and laid inside the inside back cover. It has marbled edges.
- Inscription inside back cover: "Instructor, Miss Morse, Cowles Lodge, no 15 / Box 23 / office hour Thurs 1:30-2:00" and "Ask about pindaric ode - Jonson's"
- There are also some graffiti doodles in the margin of the back cover.
- Modern Prose Style (1915)
- Front cover label: "Modern Prose Style. Gertrude Scudder Feb. 15-1915"
- The entries are in ink, and it appears it was graded in pencil at the end (C), and a few comments were inserted in the text in pencil as well.
- Back page is ripped in half parallel to the spine. The portion removed is missing.

- Folded sheet of paper laid inside the front cover begins: "Spencer - The Philosophy of Style"
- The entries are in ink, and it appears it was graded in pencil in the margins (C, B+, B-, C+) and a few comments were inserted in the text in pencil as well.
