Envelopes
History
I have several envelopes that have interesting features. With no other more appropriate category, I put them here.
The Images
All envelopes are available with both front and back scans, and comments about what is written on the front or back, either by the user or by the printer, are included below.
- An Envelope Addressed by Mary Woolley
- front Postmarked Jun 17, 1913 5:30pm in South Hadley. Addressed by Mary Woolley, president of MHC from 1900-1937.
- back I was hoping this scan would come out clearer; the flap of the envelope is embossed "President's House. South Hadley. Massachusetts."

- An Envelope from the 1800s
- front Postmarked Oct 13 4pm in Waterbury CT; no year in postmark. Addressed to S. H. Melvin in South Hadley.
- An Envelope from 1865
- front Postmarked Apr 24, 1865 in Danvers, MA. Addressed to Miss Clara H. Mudge, Mount Holyoke Seminary, So. Hadley, Mass.
- back It had only been 18 years since the first US postage stamp was issued; perhaps we should not expect that everyone in 1865 knew where to put the stamp. A Scott #65 was used to seal the flap of the envelope. Strange, but acceptable; the postal official cancelled the stamp with a four ring target cancel. Inscription: "Received Apr 25" and several phrases in a foreign language (Spanish?).
