Golf Cards
History
Mount Holyoke has its own golf course, and I have a few score cards from the course.

- 1939 Orchards Golf Course Score Card
- front "The Orchards Golf Course
South Hadley Mass." Golf etiquette and local rules. Dated in pencil: "Aug 22 1939"
- back Scorecard is six inches in width so that "stymies" could be measured under the rules of golf as they were then. This card has been filled out with scores for four players, including Ben Loving, an area pro who shot 72, and Jimmy Young, who was the club's first pro when it opened in 1922. He shot 80 so either he was up in years or he had other things on his mind (or he couldn't putt....or something, because he was a good player at one time). The Orchards is one of the classic Donald Ross-designed courses and about 15 of the original holes remain true to his architectural style. Ross did the first 9, opened in 1922, and Walter Hatch (one of Ross' several "right hand" men) did the second 9, opened in 1927. The yardage on the card is 6,384 and for years the club had just one set of tees. The yardage from the back tees today is 6,500+.

- back This card has been filled out with scores for two players, including then-President of Mount Holyoke College, Roswell Gray Ham.
