The Helen Evans Correspondence

[Postal Card]

History

I had one card from Ruth Evans to her sister Helen Evans (the Jan 5, 1911 card) that I bought in 2001. The rest of these postal cards were purchased from a dealer on eBay in 2015. (It is probably the same dealer, as the pencil notation identifying the postal stationery looks like it's in the same hand on all of the cards.) It is good to bring them all back together again!

I love how Helen's mother calls the automobile a "machine." Example: "If we cannot go with machine and you must come by trolly" I guess the word "automobile" was not common yet!

back "My dear, Just got your card this morning as long as you'd queue up going to ans. anyway I want you to come but here just the same. I'm always unlucky for a date with Louise but I want a visit with you anyway I write Dorothy & Ethel Rice & Ruth Goodnow (not knowing whether they were in Boston or not) so perhaps they will come if the girls take their walking trip - it would be good fun in this fine weather. There is a business meeting of alumnae [...] at 10.30 Sat & I cannot attend that & luncheon too - am going to try to go to that. Skidubi [?] has a little crib now & looks too cute for anything in it. Dorothy Stevens was here yesterday. I am fine but being so neat of course, I shall give the house a thorough cleaning before you are [?] out. Love Dora"

Then Sunday it really was a nice day, and we started for East River so Florence could see the place, did'nt much expect to get there, but the roads really were quite decent, and not muddy even going down to the cottage, had a fine ride and wished you with us. The girls are going to Waterbury to lunch with Eunice, to morrow, and I think Florence goes to Glen Ridge the next day, Ruth continues to improve - will not write about clothes as you will be here so soon. Just when - and for how long. Love from mother"

The stitches just washed off! and so since he left I've been sitting up!! Oh! but it seemed good. Of course I was really lying down but it was a chair, & not a bed - such a difference. Soon you'll have much to tell you all about it & pretty soon you'll be home! much love, Ruth"
