Lower Lake/College Lake
History
Lower Lake and College Lake refer to the same body of water, between Prospect Hall and the Mandelles. (Lake Nonotuck is the same thing as Lower Lake, but I separated them out for ease of finding an images labelled "Lake Nonotuck.") Also check the photo link from my main page for at least one more photo of the lake.

My summer was not a success - very poor. I shall never return to Appledore under the same management. I'm glad you had a good summer. This is my Senior year and I'm having a glorious time. We blossomed out in caps & gowns yesterday, and I feel quite grand and dignified. Write when you can. Love, Nancy."

I wish you could share a little of that blessed sea fog with us! Almost ever since own return we have been swelling in almost unendurable heat. Sufficent to wilt anyone not an ardent sun-worshipper like J. He revels in it & spends a good part of day working at his lectures in full blaze of the sun! We drove up twice. If Lennan to attend the Berkshire Sym. Festival concerts - one or all Brahms program & the other featuring [...] French & Strevinsky. Kousinvitzsky in great form. The ... home we drove on to Williamstown where we stayed over night with an old friend. Our walks these days have to be limited to cool of evening between 10 & 11. Greetings to you all & a happy time together. N."

- front "The Lake and Goodnow Park, Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass." Inscription: "This is the best place that ever was; for work. I never was so busy in my life. My window looks out on this, but I never have time to. However I'm having a great time. The juniors in the hall entertain the freshmen tonight. We expect great fun. Why don't you take pity on a fellow and write to me. You don't have to do anything. M. B. B."

- back Divided back, postmarked Sep 29, 1911 12:30pm in South Hadley. #2 Published by Glesman [sic] Bros., South Hadley, Mass. Made in Germany. An Excelsior card. "Thank you ever so much for your letter. I hope you will send me some more soon. Box no. is 443. We are too busy with lessons and the various things which are going on in college, to write letters just now. Will answer if you write, though. This is a most beautiful place. I feel as if I were visiting in the country when I look out of my window to see the mountains and the lake. With love, Almira." (The name "Dolly" was crossed out, and "Almira" written in its place. What's with the alias, Almira?)

- Lower Lake
- front A real photo card; looks like Lower Lake, and its boathouse, with three canoes out on the water. "Dear Joseph, - This is to wish you a Merry Christmas, and also to remind you of our boat-rides together on the "Lower Lake." Please give our greetings to all your family, M. W. and C. M. Galt. Xmas 1905." A sticker of holly leaves and berries is affixed to the front of the card.
- back Undivided back, postmarked Dec 23, 1905 1:30pm in Holyoke, Mass. A second Holyoke postmark bears a flag cancel with a "1" in the banner. Transit mark Dec 25, 1905 8am in Manchester, Mass. Amazing - the post office was open on Christmas Day!
