Sept 20. 1871.Dear Cousin Edmund.
I believe I tried to make you promise to write first when at your house, but have forgotten whether you did or not.
Any way I'm going to write to you so to be sure of having one from you.
I am almost homesick today, though you needn't tell any one I said so, and the best remedy I have for that disease is writing letters. I have written to almost everyone to whom I owe a letter and now I think I might have some in reply: received one last night from one of the girls - shall look for one tonight too.
Mother wrote that she thought you and Ralph would go to New Haven soon. if you dont go till after you get this, will you be so kind as to ask aunt Louise for her directions for possibly I may write to her. Hope you will have a good time - wish I was going too. Why didn't you come and see me again before I came away - wish folks would let clam-bake alone dont you? for that should had a chance to have seen you more. Next summer I shall be home and if I dont go visiting a little it will be because I can't.
Suppose your watermelons are gone before this. Have you tossed any mush-melons lately? I have on the dress this afternoon that I had the time of the splash and it reminds me forcibly of that time - it was a funny occurrence after all.
If you will enclose in your next letter an apple for me I'll be very much obliged for have had only two or three since I left home.
Brought a few grapes with me but they were gone long ago. Perhaps you will think that my mind is on eating all the time from what I have written but allow me to say it is not, though I do get awfully hungry sometimes before dinner.
Now my book is patiently waiting for me to go to studying but I had rather write letters.
However my sheet is nearly full so guess I must stop.
Please answer as soon as you can and accept this with love to all from cousin,
