Mount Holyoke College
South Hadley, MassachusettsSunday
Dear Mom and Dad,
Got your letter and I'm sorry there is such a gap between my letters. They sure do keep us pretty busy around here and the work is no cinch! Thanks for the bulletin and article about Anne. I sent her a postcard of the campus in color. Very pretty.
Laundry is coming just fine. I took Mary's and mine over last Thursday at 9:30 and it was ready by 11. 70¢ for eight pounds which is quite a bit (of laundry, not money). I spent Thursday afternoon ironing and had it all done by supper time. Didn't bother to iron the sheets, I don't think they'll need it. I discovered too late that they will star
tch things for you so didn't do the shirts but next time I will have it done.My schedule was changed a little. My German Lab is now in the morning so I have only two classes on Tuesday and Thursday - German at 10 and G. Lab at 11. This gives me those afternoons free but Monday, Wednesday and Friday are rather hectic. Saturday I have German at 10 and that's all.
German seems to be my only easy subject so far. I guess we'll be having about a composition a week in English and that "cinchy" art class is going to involve a lot of practical work - namely original drawings which sort of leaves me out of things as far as that class is concerned. We haven't done too much in Psych yet - just discuss, but Math is wierd. [sic] The name of our book is the Real Number System and we have been doing work that is so obvious and easy that it really is difficult (if you follow me on that). However, I think I'm going to enjoy field hockey. I can't remember if I told you that I signed up to guard in the pool three hours a month. I figured that way I would get some swimming in whereas otherwise I might not. I think I'll also try out for the M.H. News and join the Outing Club which is very active on campus. We went to a picnic in the O.C. cabin on Mount Holyoke the other evening and it sure is a beautiful spot. We're planning to climb the Holyoke Range (17 miles) on Mountain Day. They say that if you don't do it in your freshman year, you never will, and it's supposed to be a really beautiful climb.
I think I'll try out for the freshman choir, although you really have to be quite good to make it and I probably won't. I looked into Fellowship of Faiths but was quite disappointed in their program. They seemed to have so many projects like Girl Scouts and the like (helping out in the neighborhood) that I certainly don't have to go to college to do, but could do home. Also their worship services and special programs are all open to the college so I don't think I'll join, this year anyway.
I saw my first Amherst football game yesterday. They beat Union by a tremendous score. Dick Lounsbury and Dick Havill were both playing first string for Union. We had dinner in the college cafeteria and after a tour of the campus went to Tom's fraternity (Theta Xi) where there was a "jam session". I had lots of fun although Tom isn't an outstanding conversationalist. I heard all about his trip to Europe last summer which was very interesting. They really have a beautiful campus there.
This letter probably skips around a lot. That's because I can type so much faster than I can write and so just write whatever comes.
Guess what I did this afternoon. I wrote a letter to Colgate and asked Penny up for "Llamie" the big formal October 23. I thought you would get a kick out of that.
Starting tomorrow morning I have to wait on the faculty table for a week - that includes breakfast. I'm sort of glad, however that I have it early and not during exams or sometime like that.
Glad to hear about Tommy's trombone teacher. How's the band coming? Yes, I found the pen and pencil. Cashed a $10 check last Wednesday or so.
That's all for now. Write again.
Love,
Liz
