Mount Holyoke College
South Hadley, MassachusettsTuesday evening
Hi everybody,
Seems like all I've done yesterday & today is get packages. Four in two days. Love the bedspreads & have decided to keep the alarm clock. The closet hanger wouldn't fit because the doors are too wide. I could have used it but I guess I can get along without it. How wide is that material? Posters also arrived & are great.
I'm getting along quite well with most everything. We sure have to study a lot but everyone is doing it so it isn't so bad. We had to write a 3-page composition for English right off - "The Culture of My Home Town." What a topic! Also I made a very unpleasant discovery about that "snap" art course. It involves quite a bit of original drawing! That's going to be horrible.
My speech test was this afternoon. The woman said I didn't have to take a speech course but that my voice could be improved a lot. that it was shame to waste such a good voice. She suggested that I be in some plays or else take her course in reading poetry next year. Sounds like she's just trying to recruit people for her class.
The mixer was nothing spectacular. I met some nice people but nobody out of the ordinary. Edgy met a real cute freshman & he came to see her Sunday. She has a date with him Saturday for the football game.
Guess who called me last night. Tom Metcalf! He's a senior at Amherst & had seen my picture in the freshman directory. I'm going to the football game with him Sat. Amherst-Union. Was I ever surprised when he called! Dick Lounsbury is playing first-string for Union so maybe I'll see him.
I've signed up to lifeguard at the pool. Only 3 hours a month & I hope I'll have a chance to swim a little. I got a letter from Penny & he says he wants to come up & try out the pool. I told him about. Sounds like a rather gentle hit to me.
The book bill is rising but it isn't up to the college's estimate yet. I've been able to charge them all at the bookstore so far & can pay for them all at once. I'll have to cash a check tomorrow to get back my shoes from the repairman. When was payday? You'd better write me when you make a deposit so I'll know.
I got a Holyoke emblem (light blue) & sewed it on my blazer & it looks 100% better than that jewelled affair. The kids are wearing (or starting to wear) Bermuda skirts. Do you know how Aunt Hattie is coming on mine?
Guess that's all for now. I have a couple of pages of Cardinal Newman's "The Scope & Nature of University Education" to read for English. Talk about boring books!
Write again soon & love to all.
Love,
Liz(Hockey starts today)
P.S. How did the band do Sat. night? Didn't proofread so pardon mistakes please.
