A Letter Written on Oct 13, 1954

Wednesday

Dear Mom,

They've been keeping us quite busy & I haven't had a chance to write. We have no English class this A.M. as the professor is out of town. However, he gave us 2 books to read & a 7 page composition to write to make up for it so I think I would rather have a class.

I had after-dinner coffee last night at the off home of the academic dean along with all other freshmen here on scholarship. It was fun, but unbearably hot. The weather has been horribly hot & muggy the past few days after one heavy frost.

I took the tandem canoe test yesterday & passed it so now can use a canoe at any time.

I'm still without a date for "Llamie." I decided I didn't want to ask Tom M. I'll probably wind up with a blind date for it. Do you suppose you could send up my navy blue formal? I wouldn't want to wear heels with a blind date & that formal is long. The dance is the 23rd. Have you any suggestions about a date? It's getting quite late. If I can get a blind date from Amherst I won't have to get him a room.

I have decided not to try out for the News this year. I was quite disappointed in the paper. I wouldn't get a subscription if I were you. I'm going to try to stay out of too many extra activities this year, anyway.

Wed. P.M.

I was just informed that I'm a candidate for treasurer of the class. I was quite surprised. I'm running against 3 others - I'm not yet sure who my opponents are but the elections are next week. In the meantime I have to eat meals in different dorms & meet all the freshman. [sic] Even if I'm not elected, I'll get to know the class.

Got your letter. I'm going to try to get in touch with Tim Hanley tomorrow so hold off on the navy formal. I'll drop you a card if I need it.

I said I would send my schedule & then forgot to include it, so I'm sending it now. [no longer with the letter, but maybe this schedule found separately in the letter collection]

We have been going to church every Sunday. required are 6 out of 13, but I think I'll go to more. I also want to go to Quaker meeting some Sun. with Edgie. Chapel is every Tues. & Thurs. A.M. & 3 are required every 2 weeks.

About slipcover - Aunt Hattie suggested a plain color. We decided on dark green - to match the sample if possible. I think 7 yards of 48" would do it. Mary's parents are sending up a large rug. we changed the beds around & our small rugs look lost.

Getting my sleep & I haven't missed breakfast yet. I'm eating more than ever before & I've lost a couple of pounds but that won't hurt. I got some $5.50 concert tickets & haven't yet paid for them yet. [sic] My bill from the bookstore hasn't come either - around $35 as I figure it. I'll drop you a card in a day or so.

Love,
Liz
