A Letter Written on Dec 9, 1956

Mount Holyoke College South Hadley Massachusetts

Sunday night

Dear Mom & Dad,

Just got back from Cambridge and what everyone there termed "the best songfest they had ever attended." Of course this is also my opinion. Can't begin to tell how great it was - loads of interesting & talented people - all interested in folk music & guitar or banjo playing. My head at this moment, is simply overflowing with some of the thousands of tunes I heard there - most of them for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to call the Bakers.

Have a chance to go skiing in Canada for the last part of Christmas vacation. I'm so excited I don't know where to begin - There would be 8 of us - 2 cars - Mostly MIT students & Harvard grad school also one couple who were at Katahdin - he an M.I.T. grad & she from Wellesley. Anyway, Jim Butler, my Harvard grad. friend, has invited me. They would come through Syracuse from Ohio the Friday after Xmas & possibly spend that night in Syracuse - if we'll have extra floor space for sleeping bags. Leave Sat. A.M. for Mt. Moosilauke, N.H. where Dartmouth O.C. always has a big ski trip over New Years. From here we would go to Cherbourg (?) to ski for about 5 days until school starts again. I realize this would only give me a week at home, but this is a chance I might never have again. There's nothing I'd rather have for Christmas than part (?) of this trip. Trip should cost around $50 - most of which I would have to borrow from you until Winston & Co. comes through with a pay check [should be here when I return from vacation]. What do you say to this? I should let them know by the end of the week so don't delay too long in RSVP'ing. [Have decided I can get along with the old ski boots].

As for vacation - we get out the 20th & Town Hall concert is that night. Mud has invited me to spend the night at her home so I would be coming on up to Syr. Friday. the 21st.

Have you heard any more about the Mt. Marcy Thanksgiving accident? Made some inquiries this weekend & the whole thing seems to be shrouded in mystery.

Do let me know how you feel about Christmas. Syracuse is a great place & I love it dearly but I'm not looking forward to 2 1/2 weeks there - especially during skiing season. The group going skiing are all mature, fine people &, as I said before, I'd be perfectly willing to forego other Christmas presents in favor of this. Such a trip should improve my skiing 100% & also my guitar playing as Jim plays very well & doesn't mind instructing amateurs.

Bed time - we all had very little sleep this weekend - singing went on most of the night - both nights.

Love,
Liz

P.S.
Have had two wonderful letters from the guy I met at Mt. Washington - both in the past week. He has a fascinating style of writing. The one here when I got back today was entirely in verse - and extremely fine verse at that. Rather unusual for a med. student, I would think.

Love to all,
Me

Impatiently waiting for your next letter!
