Mount Holyoke College
South Hadley, MassachusettsMonday
Dear Mom & Dad,
Have talked with only one person who knew much about Norwich but he was quite enthusiastic about it. It sounds like a point midway between West Point and a regular liberal arts college with a ROTC program. I'm sure Tom would like being in New England and this would probably be something he could handle whereas he might have found himself a little over his head at Colgate. I would say if he can get in it would be a good place. Any other possibilities? Better not wait much longer as it's May already.
The past couple of weeks I've been slaving like a dog for the sake of weekends. Conference was really great. Saw lots & lots of people, including Brian from Penn, went swimming, hiking & Sunday, rock climbing down near Poughkeepsie. I'm thoroughly convinced that rock climbing is, next to skiing, the greatest sport there is. Went to Lake George this weekend and spent Sat. on a cliff, going up, that is, overlooking the lake. Beautiful weather, view & climbing.
Unfortunately all good things must end & I'm resigned to spending the rest of the semester right on campus.
What would you think of my spending about 5 days in the beginning of June climbing, either at Schwangunks [sic] near Poughkeepsie or Lake George, with a fellow from R.P.I.? We've been talking about it - nothing definite yet - I finish my exams May 27 & could come home then. One good trip would be awfully nice if I'm going to be home all summer.
Sent letters to those 5 companies about jobs & got negative replies from all. "Glad to hear of your interest but - - -" on all of them.
Shall send library book this weekend. I may want to refer to it & they didn't have that one up here.
Let me know what you think of the climbing trip. It's safe. We're always roped and the only person who could possibly be hurt is the leader - if he's careless and I certainly won't be leading.
I would probably come home first anyway to see about the job.
Love,
Liz
