Monday
Dear Mom & Dad,
Classes ended Saturday & studying has begun in earnest. Exams start tomorrow. I have HEL tomorrow afternoon, History next Monday and Philosphy the last Thursday [Jan. 31[. Terribly spread out but it means I can do my studying leisurely & not feel I have to cram the old knowledge in. And, believe it or not, I actually enjoyed Mel & several other O.C.'ers and I are planning to spend this Friday, all day Sat and Sat night at the O.C. cabin - studying during the day & relaxing & singing in the evening. A pleasant prospect.
As things stand now (I'm writing the mysterious Mr. Shanker this afternoon) I would like to go to New York Thursday, after my philosophy exam, spend the night with Sally Dumper in Freeport, L.I., see him Friday A.M. & come back to school Friday afternoon. There is a possibility that Les will be going skiing that weekend & this will allow me to go along. He has met a girl at Smith who he seems quite interested in & if we go, she'll be coming too. I was over there for a song fest Friday night & met her. She's great & probably the best thing for Les. He needs a girlfriend.
Stek didn't have too much to say about Camp Hillcroft. She was offered the job but didn't feel she could take it so recommended me & also a friend of hers at Cornell so I'm not the only iron he has in the fire. She suggested that I inquire about the "country-club" atmosphere that bowling evenings suggest. She did say that she thought the camp was run by sensitive, intelligent people & that it wouldn't be a repeat performance of Chateaugay. I think the person for a reference is Perry Brown, of my unit couple the year before last. He's a school principal in Niagra [sic] Falls but I don't have his address. Could you hunt around for my list of counselors for 1955? It's in a Chateaugazette - either in my middle desk drawer or in a manila folder on the bottom shelf of my bookcase. I'll wait before giving him any names until he asks again but I should have some ready. Should I include someone from school too? Perhaps Miss Voorhees or Mrs. Woodward, our housemother.
I've broken my firm resolve to stay out of everything but Glee Club next year but, I feel, with good reason. I'm now business manager of the M.H. News - a job involving bookkeeping, etc. taking little time & paying me $80. Also, this will give me a good excuse for refusing any positions like house-president or committee heads, which might come my way & which might have proved touchy otherwise as people are sometimes very insistent. It will also keep me out of O.C. administering.
You probably have heard we have a new president - Richard Gettell (sp?) Gettel - an economist & teacher, graduate of Amherst, etc & only 45. Sounds very good & perhaps changes will come with this new blood. Mr. Ham did a masterful job of announcing the choice at an assembly yesterday. We'll miss old "Ros" but the school needs someone different - which an economist certainly will be.
We're giving Mr. Ham a royal sendoff - the first weekend of next semester is to be devoted to an arts festival in his honor. A terrifically imposing cast of celebrities - Robert Graves, Maria Tallchief & co, Cleveland Symphony & Tanglewood string quartettes among them.
I've had thoughts of being a little more sociable next semester - you know, the old - "new leaf". Buckland is having a house dance next month & I'm in line for a blind date from Yale. Also thought of writing Penfield up for Snow-Ball - also in Feb. What do you think?
Well - back to the books & my divine HEL course -
Love,
Liz
P.S.
I've managed to accumulate a bookstore bill of $55! Bad news any day.
