Dear Mom & Dad,
Letters to the West finally bore some fruit! The tree grows in Walla Walla [such a lovely name!], Wash. where Whitman College is located. Enclosed letters [no longer with this letter] will catch you up to date on my correspondence with them. The Miss Whitaker who is mentioned is the headmistress of Northampton School for Girls & a lovely little old lady. I went over to Northampton last Monday & met her. Miss Sallie taught at that school for a while & she had only the best things to say of her.
Miss Whitaker gave me some background on Miss Sallie & St. Paul's School in general. It's an old school and of late has rather gone down hill. Miss Sallie's job is to build it back up to its former high standing & Miss W. sees this as an interesting challenge, to which she is confident Miss S. will rise with flying colors. And this will certainly be more interesting for me than working under a long-established, traditional regime.
St. Paul's, itself, is at present a small Episcopal girls' boarding school. It begins with 7th grade & has about 65-75 students.
The salary - $3000 & room & board - is excellent. With this I might even be able to fly home for either Christmas or spring vacation. This also gives rise to the possibility of making enough in one year to take a year out for grad school - assuming I work this summer & forget s. school.
Several of my friends are even more excited about this offer than I am & at the moment, one gal is sitting at my elbow, Atlas in hand, planning my route to Washington. Sure sounds like a fine opportunity to see the country! And, if I manage to get a car, I almost certainly have a passenger - Sue Flagler who is headed for Hawaii.
Needless to say, I too, am very excited about this job. It's just the sort of thing I've been hoping for. Sounds much more exciting than Maine.
Let me know what you think of the whole plan. I might be home a week from Sunday. We're spending the weekend in the Gunks & if someone there is driving to Syracuse, I'll tag along. I would like to get things settled as soon as possible as Mr. Dunn at Kents Hill is still waiting for my decision.
I'll let you know if I'm coming home.
Studying is rather "so-so". I'm certainly enjoying my maor more than ever before but I took a look at some of the old exams last night & the prospect is frightening!
Sorry to hear Tom's unhappy. I'm really surprised as I had the idea he really liked it. I'm looking forward to a trip up there the weekend of June 8. Also - still plan to climb with Ira & company that following week.
Love,
Liz
P.S. Remember the long history paper I was writing on the Battle of Saratoga? Got it back today with an A minus on it. Was I ever pleased! I'd worked awfully hard on it & this means at least a B for the course.
