A Letter Written on May 3, 1908

Mt. Holyoke College,
So. Hadley, Mass.,
May. 3, 1908.

My dear Lucy,-

This isn't much like last Sunday, is it! I was surprised to have it grow so cold. I had a guest up Friday afternoon, and we went over the campus. We didn't feel like sitting under the trees the way we did last Wednesday.

Probably Mary will write you about the grand Vesper Service which is coming this evening. There are to be choirs from Holyoke and Springfield beside all our own, and we are to have two men at the organ, besides Mr. Hammond, one for the Offertory, another for the Processional, etc. We are not supposed to have any guests.

Are you coming down for May day? I think it'll be fine to see the Ben Greet Company again. Do you remember when they played "The Midsummer Night's Dream"?

We Juniors are practicing spinning tops I have learned two "throws" which are pretty reliable. I like to play with my top. I'm going from that to tennis now. I've just bought a racket and ball and been out practicing about three times. We have to get up early in the morning to get courts when we want them.

Mary seems to be flourishing. I think she looks as if she'd gained a good many pounds since fall. Dont you? College doesn't have the same effect that way on her that it did on you. Are you feeling pretty well now? I am flourishing in great shape, - gaining flesh and muscle.

Did I tell you I was going back to Northfield this summer? I'm not now. In vacation I made up my mind to devote my summer to my teeth. I expect to return next fall with two rows of good clean regular teeth. Can you guess what that means? I dont know but some of my upper ones will fall out before June, they are so very loose.

We had a Silver Bay Rally last Sunday. I'd rather like to go but dont plan on it now. Which course in Bible did you take, Lucy? I am having Miss Dutcher's "Acts & Epistles" and think it's a splendid course. It gives us lots of new ideas. I'm getting rather interested in Theology and if I could find some other girl who wanted to read & talk over some of the things I'd like it. I have a book from the Library now "Beginnings of Christianity". It's interesting to read but hard to study alone.

I hope you'll have a good pleasant spring, Lucy, & keep well.

Sincerely
Your friend
Ruth Johnson
