[Some paragraph marks added for ease of reading.]Gardner, Mass.,
Sept. 5, 1906.Dear Sister:-
I suppose it is against the rule to write letters in school time but I haven't a thing to do and shall not until twelve o'clock. Mr. MacNamara gave us about five pages in Chemistry and I have read that over and over until I am sure I don't know it. That was the only thing I had to get for to-day. I have the first four periods study to-day so you can imagine how delightful that is. I am the only one of '06 back but both Ida and Eveline Shay say that perhaps they will come in a week or two. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the boys came after a while. I think that Miss Wallace is not going to stay but a few days. I hear that she is going to Everett and the school there does not begin until the tenth so she is staying until someone is found to take her place.
I had a pretty postal from Carrie yesterday. It was an up and down one too. Last night I got two postals from Auntie after she had returned home. I have 170 now.
I guess the party was a great success. We ate so much that we nearly killed ourselves and laughed until we could hardly sit up. Everything we had to eat was fine. The rolls just melted in our moths. My cakes turned out well and Mama frosted one. We girls played croquet for quite a while in the P.M. After we came in I played and the girls sung some and danced some. Helen and her mother go to-day Bessie is going over on the track to see her off & Linnie & I are going to drive
sdown.Wasn't it a shame that the men didn't get a prize? Holyoke has very little to crow about I think for I believe they played only 177 ft. But the idea of little Otter River getting third prize, ahead of Templeton! That is outrageous. However I think perhaps it's just as well the "Rough & Ready" didn't get a prize. They would have been too happy.
Elsa came down before I had my second cake done and we went up & played tennis. The wind did not trouble us much though we thought that it would. I played the best I ever had. She beat the set, though, 6 to 5 games so you see it was close. It began to rain so we had to stop. I stayed at Mrs. Carpenter's during the rain and then came home.
Linnie has had a position at the Inn for two days. That Miss Russel, the funny lady that had the blue bow in her hair, has been employing her as a private secretary for two afternoons at fifty cents an hour and has engaged her for next summer. Miss Russel writes letters for some hospital I think. Linnie says she is accustomed to dictate for a typewriter and so goes very fast. Linnie says she is very pleasant.
I went into Hagar and Houghton's yesterday. Freddy waited on me and I found out that Mr. Carpenter is working in there.
I can't think of anything more (though it is only the third period) so I will case the delightful occupation & read that chemistry over for about the fortieth time. With love,
P.S. Mama says that she was going to write a few lines to-night but as long as I have written she guesses she won't. She says she is awfully sorry you had to wait so long. Molly
PS #2. Lee came up & sat with me this morning on the car. He said he wanted to say Good Morning to his guardian.
I have been promoted to the Special Room. Eveline has come back & will sit up there too.
