Dear Lucy,
It is not much of a letter you will get tonight, for I can't think of much of any thing new to write. We have had no company, and no bonfires to entertain us, and everybody about is well, so far as I know. Mrs. Jennie Cobleigh had a bad turn, her heart, at the Ladies' Meeting yesterday afternoon, but was better last night. Mrs. Pratt went to the meeting yesterday, the annual meeting, and stayed till supper was nearly ready, when she went all to pieces, and had to go home.
Mary went up to supper and stayed in the evening - she and Dorothy G- were very much grieved - Jay Stanley got seven votes for secretary of S.S. and Mary got only one - and Dorothy got one vote for librarian and Charlie Rich got nine - they M. & D. felt very badly, in talk. I presume one of us wrote you about the present the S.S. gave Mr. Parker - they raised $10 and gave him for him to buy something that he wanted. Mr. P- finally consented to be superintendent for this year, and Bessie Lord is assistant.
Mary has just gone to that May festival that she, Marian, Dorothy and Helen have got up - I hope it will go off all right - she wore her old white dress, pink sash & hair ribbon. Carrie has just gone to get ready, and says tell you she is sorry you are not here to go with her. Carrie went to Worcester Tuesday - she found Emma out of doors - she has gained a good deal, and will leave the hospital soon, unless she has an operation performed. Emma did not mention that and she don't know that we know there is talk of one.
Esther was house-cleaning. Carrie says tell you that "Biddy has a day off every week now." I am quite smart - wipe dishes and help make beds. I carried the magazines to Mrs. Roundy this morning, and went up to the market at noon to get some dinner for us: that was quite a walk and made me a little shaky, but was all right as soon as I rested a little. Uncle Isaac has not felt quite as well this week. The saw-mill came and sawed our wood yesterday. Ted Hersey has agreed to split it: he raked leaves for us part of this afternoon, and did the work finely. W. Rice raked one day but he works pretty fast. I called on Mrs. Parker yesterday. I saw Annie go by the house this morning. Charlie is to sing tonight.
Well, I don't think of much more that will interest you, and as I am rather tired, will stop. Take good care of yourself and don't hurry all the time = keep cool.
Much love,
Mama.
