A Letter Written on Jan 30, 1908

Horseheads, N.Y.,
January 30, 1908.

Dear Lucy:

I was so glad to receive your letter. You certainly have had a busy time this vacation, with so much grip. I have not had it yet and hope I shall not. I have a bad cold settled on my bronchial tubes now. I am taking four or five kinds of medicine, so it seems as if it must get better soon.

We have been very busy in school since vacation, getting ready for Regents exams, which come this week. There are very few trying so it is quite a vacation. I have had about sixty papers to mark. That is nothing to what I will have in June. I dont know as there will be anything left of me then.

We have been having a great epidemic of measles and mumps here, which quite seriously affects the grades. We have feared one in scarlet fever but don't know

Jan. 31

I stopped writing yesterday morning, and didn't get about it again yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Elmira to a meeting of Chemung Chapter, D. A. R. I had never visited it before, and I had a very pleasant time. Of course they were all total strangers, but they were very cordial. After the business meeting there was a fine paper on Child Labor. Then there were vocal solos and whistling solos, which were fine. Refreshments were served later. I enjoyed it so much. One comes in contact with so many nice people in that way. I miss my societies at home so much. Both D.A.R. and Avon Club are having exceptionally fine programs at home this year.

Since I came back from vacation mamma has fallen and broken her wrist. Of course it has been quite painful and makes her helpless, but it is doing very nicely. She wrote day before yesterday that she was getting so she could use the fingers of that hand some. It makes it bad for auntie as she had expected to do so much sewing.

It was a very cold night. 16° below zero, they say. I wish it would get warmer, so one could enjoy it. I dread to go out. I think my cold is better this morning. If I go on taking medicine at the rate I did yesterday, it ought to go.

This is the last day of Regents and the time where reports have to be made out. We will all have to work on that today.

I must close now and go to school.

Love from
Mary.
