South Hadley, Mass.,
Mar. 10, 1908.Dear Sister:-
There are volumes that I might write but time is limited. Of all the exciting events of the last two days! I never had any idea that basket-ball
sgames were so exciting. Excitement began yesterday noon when our Juniors took possession of the dining-room before the Sophs did & trimmed it all up fine. They worked terribly hard. Then what do you think the Sophs did? They marked into the dining-room & trimmed over our decorations. The Juniors told them it was not the thing & Miss Galt said the same thing but it made no difference. They kept on. After they had finished in walked the Juniors & took all the yellow & green down so the dining-room is red & blue now. Isn't it a shame that it ever happened? There is so much feeling now between the classes. There are seven great 1909 banners on the campus beside the smaller ones & the Sophs have just raised a 1910 one, 57 ft long, from Wilder to Brigham (not all the way of course)[.] Some of the Wilder Freshmen made a dandy 1911 & put it over the gym door. Wasn't that a great scheme? Then two of our Juniors didn't go to dinner last night but climbed to the very top of the Gym & put a great 1909 banner up there. Last evening Margaret & myself & during the last part of the time Alice made a great 1911 banner & put it out of Marion Osbourne's window. But as there was a 1909 one just below & to-day a 1910 above we have changed & put it out one of the windows by the stair-way. Everywhere are banners, banners, banners. The P.O. boxes are all tied with green & yellow. A great strip of yellow floats from the flag-pole.This is to-morrow's program. At 10 o'clock we Freshmen have a parade, each with an umbrella, all decorated with yellow. (There have been quite a number of such ones around to-day.) At 11:30 is a Junior-Freshmen sing. At 2:00 the games begin - Sophomore-Senior & Junior-Freshmen. The Freshmen wear white skirts, white jumpers & immense sailor knots of yellow tied with a bit of green. Our badge that we have worn all day & will wear for a while is two strips of yellow & green ribbon tied around our heads - anyway that suits us best. We even wore them to the recital to-night. The Juniors have arm pieces of green with 1909 on them & most of them are edged with yellow. The Seniors & Sophs are wearing bows of red & blue ribbon. What do you think we are going to have for a mascot? Dr. Hooker's yellow cat? Isn't that appropriate? She is a member of our class too. When Miss Trueblood came into Math, she stopped in surprise & then said that she didn't know as Spring had come yet but we surely looked like crocuses.
Lessons, where are they? The Social Club has a meeting to-morrow night & I am thankful for once that I don't belong for I will have a long quiet evening to myself & I guess I shall need it.
I have just come home from Miss Couch's recital & it was perfectly grand. I never supposed it would be so good. A great many girls went just to see what it was like & I guess they found nothing to laugh at. A Sophomore said, mind you, a Sophomore, that it was the best thing that had taken place this year.
I must stop as I want to see Katharine & congratulate her. I am sorry Uncle isn't feeling well. I hope that he is better by this time. I will try & write earlier so you will be sure & get your letter Sat night.
With much love,
Molly.
