Dear Madam:-

The following are some of the features distinguishing Pearson's Essentials of Latin for Beginners. If you are not familiar with the book we think you will be interested to know about it.

(1) It is systematic, following out a definite plan of development. A good example of this is found in the treatment of the verb, which is developed through the active voice of the first conjugation before the other conjugations are touched, thus making it possible to emphasize the formation of tenses from the principal parts.

(2) The necessary English grammar is given in each lesson. When the grammar review is given in the front of the book it lacks the force of special application.

(3) Word lists are given at regular intervals to provide for constant drill on the declensions and conjugations.

(4) Every fourth or fifth lesson is devoted entirely to reading, based upon simplified portions of the first book of Caesar.

(5) Besides the regular sectional reviews, every lesson contains a separate review exercise. This forms a very flexible feature and increases the number of exercises materially, where necessary.

(6) It offers a course of seventy lessons, containing the essentials, and a supplementary course of six lessons for those desiring fuller treatment.

(7) The lessons are easy and very carefully graded as will be shown by the fact that only seven principles of syntax are introduced in the first fifteen lessons.

(8) The work throughout is based upon Caesar, and offers an adequate preparation for that author.

If you are interested in a book of this description we shall be glad to hear from you in regard to it. If you know the book, which is also possible, we hope you will let us know your opinion of it. The favor of a reply in that case will be appreciated. The price of the book is 90 cents.

Besides Pearson's Essentials of Latin for Beginners, permit us to remind you also of Pearson's Latin Composition, Harkness's Complete Latin Grammar, the revised Frieze's Vergil, and our new four-book editions of Caesar - Harkness and Forbes'. If you have thought of making any changes whatsoever in your Latin texts, we trust you will let us hear from you.

Very truly yours,
American Book Company,
by J. K. Bixby.
