A Letter Written around Jun 14, 1906

Jamaica Plain,
Boston, Mass.

Dear Lucy:

I am afraid I shall have to disappoint you this year and I am very sorry as I should have liked so much to visit you. I came east last Friday night arriving at the college Saturday morning. I stayed there until Tuesday morning looking up all the people I know, and then came on to Boston. I am an excursion ticket which is only good until June 18. I had to come to Boston to get my ticket signed and as Rachel Riley had invited me to visit her I am staying two or three days with her. Then I shall go back to college for my class reunion, and Monday leave for home.

I am sure you will excuse me when I tell you the reason. I could have my ticket extended but I dont feel that I can afford to stay any longer. If I had not come this way I could not at all and to avoid giving up the trip I came for the ten days. Next time I come east I will surely try and visit you. You will forgive me won't you.

I am having a glorious time seeing the sights of Boston. Yesterday I took a trip clear out to Cambridge, Concord and Lexington, seeing all the historical and literary places of note. It is so perfectly beautiful around here that I wish I could stay a long time.

You will be glad to hear that I have a position to teach next year. It is in Liberty, N.Y. a very pretty place in the Catskill Mts. I expected to teach Biology and mathematics, but may change the latter for Latin. Are you to be in the same place next year?

My people have bought a place on the same street where we have lived, repaired it, and have lived there since May 1. It is very pretty and pleasant now that it is fixed up and we expect to get a great deal of pleasure out of it.

I have not been working at all this spring but have been trying to doctor up and get to feeling real well. I am feeling a great deal better and am more hopeful.

I must close now, hoping for forgiveness,

With love,
Mary.
