August 15 - 1906Dear Lucy:
I am afraid you will not think me very swift to write after begging so hard for a letter, but it is the same excuse, as of old. I am glad you were not angry with me for not coming to see you in June. The next time I am in Mass I shall certainly do my level best to come and see you. And we will hope that the time won't be too many years away.
I certainly had a fine time at my reunion. There were seventy-three of our girls back for the banquet. It was at the Hotel Hamilton, and was of course a very fine affair. The toasts were excellent, some of them very funny. Oh! it was very good to see so many of the girls again, although two or three were not there whom I had hoped to see. Sunday I attended Baccalaureate, campus sing, and vespers. The music was fine that days, especially the violin accompaniments at vespers. Monday I left for home after a very happy ten days.
This has been a very quiet summer, for been away from home very little. I have been up the lake only three times and to Chautauqua once. I hope to go a little more before I have to leave. Two evenings I have been to the vaudeville theater at one of the lake resorts, a sort of Coney Island. There is a company of Indians camping on the lake and giving realistic reproductions of Hiawatha with all accessories of war paint. They say it is very fine and hope to go soon.
I have been reading German with a young lady this summer and have enjoyed it very much. The book we have read is Freytags Soll und Haben. I have also been tutoring a lady in French. These with sewing and reading have been my chief occupations this summer.
Now the time is getting rather short before I must go to my school so we are pretty busy. I have to have quite a little sewing done to get my clothes in order. Then I shall have to look over my school work some. My eyes have been bad lately. so I have just had my glasses changed and hope they will be all right now.
I am sure I shall enjoy my school work when I once get started. It seems to be a very nice position. I am to teach Biology, English and English History so you see I will have my favorite subjects, though I know English is a hard subject to teach.
Liberty is a place of about 2000, a health resort down in the Catskills, and I infer rather an aristocratic town. My address will be Liberty, N.Y.
I must close now, hoping to hear from you soon,
With love,
Mary. (E.S.)
