A Letter Written on Sep 23, 1937

[A pencil inscription is written over the letter: "Please return to Mother at once"]

Sept. 23 - [No year was added, but Roswell Ham was inducted as president in 1937.]
Noon

Marmee dearest

Just returned from Convocation and the induction of Mr. Ham as president - in S A H because Chapel isn't half done yet. The ceremony was impressive, but his speech long, and my tummy rumbled continually.

Yesterday some of us shopped in Holyoke, and I indulged in curtain material and other necessities, then sat up quite late sewing with Minette. You'd like the looks of my room now - I hope! The right orange and green just couldn't be found, but the general effect is satisfactory.

Last night there was a Freshman-Junior sing where I missed my Reitz more than ever, because she seems to belong at gatherings like that. Her parents have been quite ill, and her friends say she was weepy when they left. Golly - there is no one like her.

Dad's darling radio is grand company, and is the center for much social stuff - my room is usually full. I like it, and can hang a sign on the door when I need quiet. At the second hand shop I acquired a four shelf stand to put under the radio, because your round tea table (which I wish I'd sent back with you) just couldn't fit into this small room. I carefully swiped a rod from another closet which had two - for my hole in the wall, and have hung a matching curtain up. If this room were only a yard wider!

Classes begin this afternoon, but I have only one. My schedule looks fair enough - I have no long laboratory periods - but must look forward to several studio hours and much library work.

Yesterday I also bought some Concord grapes! You'll frown, mom, but - the grape season is short and we never have them here.

Mrs. Eckard is awfully nice - a bit deaf but just grand. Mrs. Calder was here day before yesterday - and has been in Boston. I thought she'd gone back to India and the elephants.

I've written letters you told me to - and hemmed more skirts. You'd be shocked at the exhibitions of efficiency here. Even Jimmy has covered pillows!

My cold - about all gone - prevented my singing this morning, but I'm going out for glee club - I expect!

The lunch bell just rang. I'll try to write more often this year - and some to Ella - .

Take care of yourself - don't work too hard, and hug the infant for me.

Love,
Barb.
