A Letter Written on Dec 3, 1937

Marmee dearest,

I recent [sic] your statement about my being to[o] busy with Arthur to write Betty. I wrote her Sunday right after supper just as you ordered me to. Apparently she hadn't sent the wrap - but she hasn't answered my letter! But my wrap came and I just love it! It is lovelier here than it was in the store - if possible. Thank you just loads 'n' loads.

My two blue books - in Greek sculpture and Italian painting had strange results. I'd expected to flunk the former when I looked at the exam, - and I practically did - with a D+, - the first I've had. She is giving us another quiz in that because everyone did so terribly, - and altho I'd studied ten hours for the exam, and have concentrated hours so far for this coming quiz - yesterday I went to her and felt awfully rude - but had to show her our class notes are impossible. She was awfully nice - and I feel as sorry for her as she does for us, but I don't see what I can do. Don't say "study more" - one can't study a picture when one can't find it - as is true of half of the things she's given. Well - I'll concentrate more today and tomorrow - but don't expect any good results!

The second book - which I had the day before this mess - was an A- - the first time - about - I've had that in an exam. Miss Hyde, who is also my major advisor, is a very hard worker - so that was very pleasing! And a history paper was returned with an A-. However - I am going to become a grind with the exception of Friday and Saturday evenings!

Frank Hardy - Chi Psi from Amherst - wanted me to drive to Boston with him tomorrow, - but on account of studies, choir, and library work I had to say "no."

Mrs. Hicks - and Barbara - didn't recognize me because my hair was parted differently. I ain't thin - weighing all of 130 pounds (to put it modestly), but you may remember I'd been in Boston the afternoon of the reception, and was wearing black then anyway. We can't all be built on Carolyn's lines, dear!

Good news - it seems that more than twelve lassies from dance club are going to dance in Boston on Friday, February 11th. Since there aren't 24 seniors in the club, Barbara is going too! We're repeating 2 of the centennial numbers, - the Southern one (in the white gowns), and the Pioneer number. Hope you'll go to it, - I'll let you know more about it. Oh yes - the pictures Miss Heghinian had taken will cost $1.00 a piece, - but I'd like just one, please!

You'll recognize the blanks enclosed [no longer with the letter] - not due for a long time, but you may worry over same for a while! Hope the job with Eva comes thru. Lunch time - and food is all important! Give Carol and hug and kiss for me - same to Dad. Arthur has given me his pin with no strings but great hopes. I expect you to lecture, Mother - but we've discussed our position thoroughly already! I'll be sensible!

Much love - Barb.
