Mt. Holyoke College,
So. Hadley, Mass.
Nov. 2, 1897
Dear Charles,
It is after nine o'clock so if this gets mailed with the rest it must be brief. November is coming in bravely, and laying our dust in fine shape. It has rained all day, to keep your New Yorker's cool probably. I wonder who is your mayor, the city must be quite well stirred by this time. I suppose Mass. voted for governor today. No one would ever know it here. The town has been very quiet. The mosquitoes (mos ki toes) are quite numerous this evening, have counted eight on my walls. They must be meditating spending the winter. Two weeks from Thursday we dedicate four dormitories and the Mary Lyon Hall. This will be the 60th anniversary of the founding of the college, so we must get ready to hear some long speeches. The stageing is coming out of the chapel, the walls are tinted and the stained glass windows are in. If we could have our organ we would be quite complete. That, they say will not be done until January. When we are all finished you will have to come up and see it.
The Juniors are giving an entertainment this evening. How to shop in the 20th century. They have a novel scheme of advertising different houses by using their goods, then have the owners of the goods pay for being advertised. Unique isn't it. After the entertainment they sell ices, candy, cut flowers and potted plants. It is a pity that it rained so. I was planning to go to Springfield this evening but decided that it was so dark and wet that the travelling would not be very interesting. Was thinking of taking someone home with me Thanksgiving but haven't made any arrangements yet. Keep on getting rested and if you can't see a week ahead live a day. I don't know what I ought to do next year. May find out later.
Good night -
Seraph.
