Meriden August 13 1838

Cousin Hannah

Perhaps you will be surprised to receive a letter from here. So soon after having heard from us so laterly [sic], but we think of going to Massachusetts next week and it will be necessary to write to you in order to make some arrangements before we go, we should like to have you accompany us, we intend to attend commencement at Amherst and the examination of the school at S Hadley, and we expect to visit Northampton Hatfield and Deerfield. The examination is Monday and Tuesday and commencement is Wednesday, and to attend both it will be necessary to spend the Sabbath at your house and start from there Monday morning. I should like to have you write and inform us whether you can go or not. We should like to have you but if you cannot please write that we may know as soon as Thursday or Friday and make other arrangements. The Governor his wife and daughter have just dined here, it is commencement week and we are all confusion I can just squeeze out time to write this letter between wipeing [sic] dishes and setting tables. Mother sees no way how we can go away, but we hope to get see through by Saturday. I have written no news as I expect to see you soon, please excuse this as I am in haste and know not done I make a letter

Your affectionate cousin
Sabra Smith
