[I know from another piece of correspondence that Caroline's last name begins with an H, but I do not know her full identity yet.]Capri, April 5.
Dear Abby,
If you come to Italy this summer you must come to Capri, not for a day's excursion with a visit to the Blue Grotto and a flying trip to Anacapri, but to stay over for at least two nights to explore a tiny bit of the island. It is the most beautiful place you can imagine with walks and walks each more beautiful than the last you think. The wild flowers are driving us wild - with delight. And the gardens - and it is mostly a garden - are full of lovely things. I got some seeds of things I especially liked in the garden of an old Italian florist near by and I am sending some to you. The Lavendar [sic] here is very decorative - they raise it quite as much for its blossoms as for the leaves. In one of the public gardens near the house, it shows as great mounds of lovely blue. The Echium grows in three or four years with a fine big shrub with great spikes of flowers just the color of the blue sea and sky where Capri is at its best. The ranunculus is lovely and I hope the seeds turn out to be what I asked for.
I've had a delightful time in Naples and also a very profitable one I think. I'd like to stay on there for a year some time but I fear I never shall. Old age seems too near but still who knows? If you come to Capri, this house Hotel Pagano Victoria Germania, is very comfortable, reasonable in price, and well situated. Ask for the side toward the sea and with a terrace. We have our breakfasts out of doors.
I hope your world goes well. They must be awfully glad to have you back again and I suspect you are glad to be back.
Please give my love to Mary Clayton and to Charlotte.
Much to yourself, always,
Caroline.
