A Letter Written on Jun 3, 1865

Friend George

It is rather comical how first your letter and then mine required answers, and so on until several have passed between us and our writing has almost enlarged into a correspondence. And now your last letter makes the inquiry _ "as what time our vacation is to commence?" Anniversary day is on Friday Thursday July 21st. I shall most probably leave here the next day_ although it is possible I may not leave until Monday_ indeed I do not know positively what any of my plans will be after the 21st. I do not even know for certain that I shall visit Lebanon this summer. My inclinations lean very strongly in that direction and unless Philadelphia and home present too strong an attraction to admit of any delay in my return I shall most probably stop in Lebanon. By Lebanon I also mean Hancock and Stephentown - for I shall wish to see my friends in both those places.

Yes indeed! I imagine the old beech trees below your house have many a trace upon them of those by gon [sic] days I should like to see again the names carved upon them so many years ago _

Hoping to see you soon _ next month perhaps _ I remain ever

Your friend
