A Letter Written on Feb 14, 1918

Mount Holyoke College.
South Hadley, Mass.

Department of Zoology.           February 14, 1918.

My dear

In a fire which occurred on December twenty-second, Williston Hall, our natural science building, was completely destroyed and our entire equipment of apparatus, private and museum collections was lost. We were able to start our courses as usual at the opening of the term in temporary quarters immediately given by the college. Because of the present demand for women workers we are especially eager to provide our students with facilities for the preparation of the work which is everywhere opened to them We have been fortunate in being able to replace a fair amount of apparatus by purchase. Specimens, slides and reprints are less easy to obtain.

Have you duplicate reprints of which you may be willing to dispose? Do you know of anyone who has appropriate collections, specimens, or periodicals which they would care to contribute to this institution? The subjects which we wish to cover in one pamphlet collection are those of zoological interest as well as physiological and medical topics. The department of Physiology, headed by Abby H. Turner, was in Williston Hall and her possessions were also largely lost.

If you can contribute papers, the packages may be sent to me by mail or by express collect for the college will gladly pay packing or transportation expenses. If there seems question about their use to us, perhaps you will be willing to send me a card and let me give you more definite information. I realize that these are busy times, especially busy for laboratory workers. While I appreciate this, I also appreciate the help which has awaited us on every side. Assured by this I have ventured to ask more help with the intent that we may put it to immediate usefulness.

I shall be grateful indeed for anything which you may be able to do for us and I can assure you that it will be of great value and encouragement.

Very sincerely yours,
