A Undated Letter, circa 1909

[The letter is undated, and the envelope did not survive. The year 1909 is suggested because Emma is working at Johns Hopkins in 1908-1909. In the letter, Emma mentions she's in Baltimore and has had a year with Anna, which implies it might be the end of her time at Johns Hopkins. The New York Times ran an article about "College Women and Race Suicide" on June 16, 1909. (PDF of that article here.) Ralph S. Lillie published "The Structure and Development of the Nephridia of Arenicola Cristata Stimpson" in 1905, which might be the book Emma mentions.]

Wednesday

Dear Dr. Clapp:-

I find that my note of Friday has failed to be mailed so will simply add a line. No further developments. Am finishing up at lab, and plan to go to N.Y. on Sat. and stay with my aunt over Sunday. I will "appear" in Williston sometime the first of the week and have a good talk with you.

Anna left Sunday, I 'most wept a briny drop. This year has been a very happy one with her.

I have two little instruments that will delight Miss Turner's soul. They are mine but they are for the department to use[.]

I saw Dr. Andrews review of Lillie's book. They have no use for Dr. Ralph Lille down here. - the tales they tell of his broken glass ware, his chemicals and of how he appropriated some of Dr. Jones' pet possessions, bringing forth from Dr. Jones a torrent of remarkable profanity, seem unending.

Baltimore is horribly profane. I have heard more this year than in all my life before! My! this is a strange city. [worried face]

There is no danger of race suicide here. The children are legion. I don't love the Jews or the negroes.

I must go out and mail this now and come back & get some books ready to pack.

Lovingly
Emma
