A Letter written on May 26, 1921

50 Park St. Montclair N.J.
May 26. 1921.

My dear Cornelia -

Rather used-up with this wretched moving-business, and had to go off on a farm for ten days to get myself together again. Yes! Better thank you!

Nobody at home could find this class-picture to be sent, as I promised, to Miss Palmer, - because forsooth, I didnt [sic] just know where it was, myself! - Found it as soon as I got home, yesterday, and forward it to you, tho I presume it's too late to be used. Small loss! It really doesn't do the Class credit! Libbie Ives is more interested in a passing auto, than in the class of '71. - Mollie Thompson sees a ghost:- Dear Emma Kimball never really wore such a fly-away contraption on her head: - Franc Dean & Mary Bourdon & I look like a row of ninepins just toppling over - and Mary is asleep, anyway;- (Lou and Mary Phipps are about the only ones that are paying attention to the Gaine [?].) - So I'm not grieving that the picture goes too late to get into print, - but only explaining why I failed to keep my word about getting it to you, or to Miss Palmer. -

I wish I had mentioned to Miss Palmer that three of the Class had done us proud as Educators keeping in harness almost up to the 50th Reunion, - you & Mattie Hersey & Junie Hall. - I don't remember the dates, but seems to me the Class ought to "sit up and take notice" of such records, - even if it's too late for Miss Palmer to put it in a postscript to her article!

By the way, Miss Palmer was right about there being 26 living in the Class. Helena Giles was very much alive when I last heard from her. Germany is the place where education is recognized?, but she would be glad to have a little substantial recognition from America, too! Poor girl:-

When I wrote Miss Palmer that my granddaughter, Edith Carter, would make the 4th generation at Holyoke - in 1922 or 1923 - I should have said that she is my son Edward's daughter, - not my daughter's daughter. - She is the 4th generation, - but not the daughter of a Holyoke mother, you see.

I hope my lukewarmness in the matter of this "Publicity" article, did not prevent other members from writing fully to Miss Palmer. I hope you could write up some of them, if they failed to do it themselves. I'd have liked to write you up a little bit!

Hoping to see you on Friday, the 10th, to return home either the 13th or 14th (we have a family wedding on the 15th but I think I can stay till the 14th). With much love and happy anticipations, (and I hope you will coach us daily, when we are there, so that we will make a good impression at Alma Mater)

Yours
Hettie Dodd Carter
