A Letter Written on Sep 2, 1857

Warsaw [NY]. Sep 2d 1857

Dear Emma

It is pleasant to write your name again, for it is a long time since I wrote it last, notwithstanding your wish that it should not be so long as before. These two years have been years of care, though pleasant ones. I have been teaching at Oxford, O. and found my time so full that I feared I should have to drop all correspondence, except with our own family, which I have nearly done but now I have been resting at home awhile and all my dear ones always remembered, are made sure that it is so by my letters -

I have just been writing to Lucy Coffin and can feel heartily rejoiced that I need not write to you as to her, for you have a hope in Christ which she has not. How blessed this hope in hours of sorrow. We need not wonder if those who have none sink into to despair sometimes - You found it a support when God took your father and the same will be true whatever betide you. Is your mother still living and are you teaching, or do you follow in the footsteps of Hannah and Mary, my love for the dear girls[.]

I have been visiting with all my brothers & sisters (save one brother who sleeps his last sleep) at home. We came from far and different homes to visit again our childhood home and you will readily know we have enjoyed much, though many sad thoughts too cluster around our old hearth stone. But it matters little where we are, or when we die if our eye of faith is fixed upon our blessed Savior. Cling to him dear Emma and you are safe[.] I shall meet many of all my sections (for I have one still at Oxford) in our home above - I hope to hear from [you] again, Direct Western Fem Sem - Oxford, Butler Co. O[.]

and remember me still as

Yours Sec Teacher
