A Letter Written around Jan 3, 1909

Dear Mamma:-

I can't write very much because I'm so sleepy. Don't know whether you could read the postal I sent. I wrote it in a P.O. sub-station on the corner with a horrid pen, and the blotter was so bad that it spoiled the whole thing. But I hadn't time or any better pen or blotter there to do another any better.

We are certainly having a fine time. I hope you are getting on all right, and that Elizabeth was up to keep you company today. We went to the opera last night and it was first rate. The soprano Tetrazzini was wonderful. Mrs. Hovey is as good to us as she can be - we're enjoying being here very much. We have a huge four-posted solid mahogany carved bed (with modern springs &c) that she got in the West Indies for $20! Everything is so comfortable, and she and Mr. Hovey are fun all the time.

Today we went to hear Dr. Richards at the Brick Church. He preached at college last year. It was a good service, and over about twelve so we walked up to Elizabeth's. We stopped in at the Catholic Cathedral a few minutes and as we came out, met Lillian Osgood and Gertrude Knox! The Shearers has a pleasant apartment, but it must seem small to them. All were home except Mary and I was glad to see them. Dr. Shearer is much better than last year. Conway is a dear, and Margaret I wish had come to Mt. Holyoke. There Elizabeth went with us for a beautiful four o'clock service at St. Bartholomew's. It isn't often I hear church music, or any music like that. The chorus choir is wonderful.

Tomorrow I go to see the museum man, and I hope I can find out a few points about bones. We went over to the museum yesterday for a little while. There is a huge tuberculosis exhibit there now, very interesting indeed.

But I'm so sleepy I must go to bed.

Love to you,
Abby.
