Dear Mamma:-I never was more surprised in my life than when I found a letter yesterday when I came home saying that I've gotten that Boston fellowship! I don't see how it happened! But of course I'm glad to have gotten it - $500 will mean that much less borrowed. And Friday the physiology went better than it has before - not too well, I'm not too much encouraged by that, but better. Now when I go out to South Hadley I'll see whether it's best to borrow from Dr. Clapp, from the girl who offered it to me, or from both. It will be nice to have things planned at least partially. I guess I'll get the debts paid sometime. You needn't worry about my kidneys - there never has been anything the matter with them and isn't now. My feet have hurt because I've stood so much, and I think the arches that came last night are going to be a great help. I wore them part of today. One has to get used to their stiffness but they hold the bones up where they belong and seemed to be just what is needed.
Eva Noyes spent last night and most of today with me. We went to a fine opera last night, Die Meistersinger, a splendid performance. It was very long. We got home at 1:15, so I want to get to bed early tonight. This morning we went over to the Harvard Gardens. There must be 20 kinds of flowers in blossom and Eva and Mrs. Johnson had a fine time talking about their gardens. This afternoon we went in to vespers at Arlington St. and then Eva went home. I have been wanting to have her come all the year.
Esther spent Friday night with me and she is certainly much better than last fall. I rather hope she will do the first part of her medical work at Wisconsin. She has a lot of things to do this spring at college, but only one more number of the paper to plan. She has done well with that, though two numbers other members of the board have done when she was sick.
I shall try to go shopping one forenoon this week and will see what I can do about your waist. I must have some cotton lab. ones if I can find them, for I'm roasting in those flannel ones. My room is very hot. There have been open cars on several days already and needed too. I think the season must be much farther on here than in Cleveland.
I must go to bed now.
With love -
Abby.
