A Letter Written around May 5, 1911

Dear Mamma:-

I really have done several strokes of business this week. That navy blue silk shirt waist is actually done. I bought the silk for 25 cents a yard last year you know. I think it will fall to pieces soon, but it doesn't look bad now. The thin grey one I am making is perhaps a third done. Thanks to Mr. Pingree my suit is now all right and I have that. I've decided to keep it for best and to wear my blue one in the laboratory though the skirt is rather long and can't be shortened without taking off the bands on the front. But the blue is really quite shiny - and looks more worn than I realized. Tonight I have washed my hat, that 55 cent one I sent down south for last year, and it is now drying in front of the register in a new shape. I got some new silk when I went in for my suit. I also got some shoes for you to try. They have the elastic-sided ones at Jordan's. I got these regular ones there.. They have what look to be comfortable soles and a rubber heel. There are patent leather tips, but not narrow ones. I think they look quite well and as if they might fit - $2.50. There are some for $5.00 at another place that would be right I feel sure, but they hadn't your size, and these may be as useful. I'll take them up next week.

Your check came early in the week. I'll get it cashed before I go up next week. The insurance policy has also come, and I'll pay for that.

Dr. Clapp came on with her sisters and I saw her for about an hour and a half yesterday morning. We talked as fast as possible and it was good to see her. She sent her love to you. I can't remember that she told me any particular news, except that we shall make some changes in the laboratory, which will mean a good deal of planning this spring and rearranging next fall.

Tonight I have mended seven pairs of stockings, too, and there are more to be washed and mended. I do wish the things would ever stay done, but they wont. [sic] Tomorrow afternoon I shall try to get over to see Flora a few minutes and Dr. Lowell, who has been worse since I was over Tuesday night. She telephoned me yesterday about getting Miss Schwab back and I certainly hope she has her. Then I want to get a little gasolining done and also get this hat trimmed if I can, but I can't leave the lab. early and I'm afraid somethings will get skipped.

I'm glad you felt no worse for your ride, and I hope you rest better at night.

With love to you,
Abby
