Dear Mamma:-This is certainly a whirl and I have no idea how long I'll be able to write undisturbed. I have a nice room all to myself in Mead Hall, and find it very pleasant indeed, though I'm not here much.
Saturday morning I went over to Dr. Hooker's and took a detailed look at our rooms. They look very attractive in many ways, though not as large by any means as the Lovell rooms. It seems to me that you'll like them. Dr. Clapp & Dr. Hooker agree that Miss Dean is an excellent one for us. If I can plan it, I shall try to have her come to Nashua two weeks from yesterday.
I've tried to see Dr. Clapp on the edges, but so many alumnae want to see her that it is by no means easy to get any uninterrupted time for discussion. I went over tonight in
timehope to have a little season, but it didn't work. We don't feel able to think much about Emma's leaving, and know of only one possible person for her place a girl who is to my mind not at all desirable. She was a Senior at Wellesley the year I was there. But I think Ann may come back the year after - or after she gets her degree. My physiology class has grown to 18, so that means more lab. sections, and I hardly see at present how to manage all the work. But I guess it will come out somehow. There are 26 at our '96 banquet at Amherst last night and we had a delightful time. I never saw the class livelier. Elizabeth is going up to Buckland with me for Thurs. to Mon. Then she goes to Cambridge with me and I guess she'll stay two weeks or so. It will be fine, even tho I'll have to work in the day times. I can take her to see you one day, too, and you'll enjoy that. She's just as much fun as ever. I wish Nell's school was done so she could be with us in Buckland too, but she has to go back tomorrow night. I have written Mrs. Johnson to see if she can take Elizabeth (I'm sure she can) and also if she'll let us together have one of her big rooms - at least I didn't really ask her, for she may want to save it to rent for a longer time, but I hope she'll feel moved to suggest it! She and Elizabeth will have a fine time together - I can just see how they'll take to each other.
We go to Buckland Thurs. so if you write the last of the week, send the letter there only allow an extra half day for the stage - address just Buckland, Mass.
Ethel Cochran was coming to see me at this time; but I guess she's found other people by the way.
Miss Smith is tire, but going to get thro' better than sometimes. She paid $25 just for the making of a dress, and I'd much rather have mine. I wore it last night and all day today and it has been very comfortable, though the atmosphere is so damp that there are some wrinkles. There have been showers, but not enough today to hurt anyone.
Ethel and Mabel Hedge came in then and have just gone. They both sent their love to you. Ethel thinks her aunt would enjoy being with us. I am so glad to have a chance to see some of these girls again. But I'm dead sleepy and I guess I'll be going to bed. Oh yes, Elizabeth sent her love to you too, and lots of people have inquired for you - most everybody I see.
With much love to you,
Abby.
