SundayDear Mamma:-
Miss Smith came last night and we were glad to see her. It had been pretty windy all day, rougher than we had seen it, and I was afraid she would find the trip from Rockland unpleasant, but it quieted down so that it was all right for her. We have been out to walk this morning along a pretty wood train. It was rather wet as we had a pouring rain nearly all night, but we don't mind that. The mosses and lichens are prettier when it is damp.
Friday we had a real rainy day and so I managed to work some on my laboratory directions. I can finish up that job in another half day or so, I think - enough to last until after the 75th.
Yesterday Elizabeth and I walked around the Cape - a walk of seven miles through the woods most of the way, coming out now and again to the shore. It was a beautiful day, and the views off to the islands are lovely. We called on the Fairley's and stayed about half an hour there. Then right after dinner we went out sailing. We started out with two reefs in the mainsail - and came back with the motor because the wind went down. We went down to the end of Islesboro, about fourteen miles and back, passing J. Pierpont
sMorgan's yacht in which he crosses the ocean as it was anchored at Dark Harbor. it was an elegant thing with the brasswork shining so we could hardly look at it! It has a wireless outfit among other things. We came into the harbor and just went from the Lilac to the motor boat in which we went to Castine to meet Miss Smith. We got back about 7:30 - so we were out-of-doors all day long. Captain Gray manages the boat splendidly.
I am sorry Flora thinks Walter ill-treats her. I don't know why she should expect him to help her move - I shouldn't in her place seems to me. The apartment she is to have is arranged just like Doctor Lowell's and is very pleasant indeed. I hope she will rent her rooms comfortably to pleasant persons. I don't see why you should write to Walter - I hope he will not take it into his head to come out this fall before the 75th.
Esther is good to write to you - I hope she is really able to go back to Madison.
It is time to get ready for dinner now. Miss Smith sends her love to you and to Miss Dean. I hope you are getting on all right. I suppose Mrs. Blakely will be coming back next week if they follow their original plan.
With love to you -
Abby
