Mountain View House
H. S. Sanborn, Prop.

North Woodstock, N.H.

Thursday forenoon

Dear Mamma:-

This is the place where Nell Swift and I stayed years ago. The old proprietor has died, but his son-in-law runs the house and it is a good place. We have found comfortable places at reasonable cost almost everywhere anyway.

Yesterday we came across to Profile Notch in the morning by auto from where we stayed. We climbed two little peaks which give fine views of the Notch, and walked around Echo Lake. Then we came on down to Profile Lake and went rowing for an hour. It was lovely[.] The views of the Old Man of the Mountains are better from the water and of Eagle Cliff on the other side. Then we walked on down toward this end and took the stage when it came along a few miles down the road. We got here just a little while before it began to rain. My poncho has been very useful though we haven't gotten caught in hard showers. We were going up Moosilauke Sunday after-noon but didn't because a big shower came up just as we were starting. It hailed as well as rained and we were glad not to be out in it. Monday was a perfect day and we saw all there is to see I guess! It is a wonderful view. We came down Tuesday forenoon because it was a good day, though we had planned originally to stay two nights. I'm so glad we could get good weather for Beryl had never been up so high a mountain. There are many things to do here, but we can't get out until it stops raining, and I'm afraid it may not stop very soon.

We shall start down Saturday morning and shall probably stop off and ride around Lake Winnepesaukee [sic] on the steamer, reaching Jessee's before supper, I think. We'll stay there over night and go home Sunday afternoon. As far as I can see the trains don't connect at all via Oakdale, so we shall go around by Worcester. I haven't any timetable, but we'll get home sometime Sunday night I expect.

With love to Miss Smith and to you. I was glad to get letters from both her and you here yesterday -

Abby.
