A Letter Written on Aug 29, 1915

Dear Mamma:-

It has been a fairly pleasant day in spite of rain this morning. There doesn't seem to be any real storm, but the wind stays northeast. I don't know what it will be like tomorrow but I hope it will be fairly decent so we can go by boat. Kathleen Nealon is going to share my stateroom. She is a Mount Holyoke girl, and was at college last fall with Lilla Clement, but you may not remember her. My trunk is pretty packed, so it will take only a little time in the morning. I'd like to stay longer, but it can't be. We have had a good time anyhow. I hate to go and leave Miss Smith for she isn't well at all. She is so tired that the year is going to be very hard for her. She plans to stay a week longer and then come to South Hadley after a few days at home, if her mother stays about the same.

Captain Gray took Mrs. Woodward, Miss Smith Miss Henshaw and me over to call on Mrs. Woodward's daughter today - about three miles in the auto, and a pretty little ride. The daughter wasn't home, but we have done our duty anyhow. We stopped in at the other place where we know the people the other day, so we feel we have been quite virtuous.

Yesterday we had a very nice call on Mrs. Dow and her sister over in Castine. Mrs. Dow looks well and wanted to be remembered to you. She had been down to Mount Desert to see Miss Calkins recently. Her sister's husband belongs to an old Castine family and they have the loveliest old furniture I ever saw. Mrs. Noyes (the sister) gave us tea is [sic] beautiful old cups and they showed us many interesting things. Mr. Noyes has been working up the history of Castine and they say he as shown that Castine was permanently settled before Plymouth. It is very interesting historically surely.

I expect to go up to Jessee's as I may have told you, Tuesday afternoon. I'll get to South Hadley by Friday sometime - possibly earlier though it will take time for the wedging of my teeth.

Now I'll go to bed so as to get up a little early and finish packing. The light I have is too small for that job.

With much love to you -
Abby
