A Partial Letter Written on Aug 23, 1917

Thursday morning

Dear Mamma:-

Grace and I are going up on Joe Ledges in a few minutes. I have been waiting and waiting for a nice day when she could see Washington, but I guess there aren't going to be any. But it hasn't really rained for two days so we'd better be thankful for that.

Yesterday we walked over to Gorham and back in the forenoon, a lovely walk except that we couldn't see the big mountains. We went up one side of the river and back the other and had time over there to do a few errands. For one thing I got two boxes so as to send home some things I shall not need in Maine. Shall not mail them today. Mis Safford writes that you and she are getting on well and that you can spare me a while longer, so I sent her a card asking her to send my box to Pemaquid Point where Miss Smith is. As far as I can learn there would be practically no one I know left at Harborside when I got there so shall not go there.

We expect to leave here next Monday morning, go to Portland and out from there. Grace will leave me part way down the line to Portland. We have had a fine time together up here even if there has been such poor climbing weather.

I am so glad Miss Safford has decided to stay with us. Please tell her so. I think we are fortunate to get anyone who is
