Dear Mamma:-
I'm writing downstairs in the writing room because I have moved my bed up close to the window and in doing so have made it inconvenient to use my light. I'm staying here for a week while I take the walks at this end of the town. I shall move Saturday, I think, where it is cheaper - and alas, it will not be so comfortable. The house here is very pleasant, also the people.
This forenoon a Mr. and Mrs. Harvard from near Providence were going about six miles up the valley to hunt for a camera they had lost three days ago. They asked me to go with them in their car. The road was the hilly kind Dr. Paige likes to climb and the view was splendid. We went across a trail about a mile to a place where the view of Mount Washington is particularly good. It was certainly good of them to take me along. They found the camera.
Yesterday I went to walk a little way with a woman who seems pretty near crazy! She has lost a son, whether in the war or not I don't know, and the poor thing seems unable to get into any normal state of mind. Her husband seems to be a nice man, and I should say she was acting about as Mrs. Harnun did after Mamie died. She wants to climb a mountain with me, but she'd never get to the top in the world! I'm sorry for her but I don't think I'll take her up a mountain.
There is a most interesting Boston woman who sits next me at table. She has had some interesting Christian Science experiences.
It was cold enough here last night so that there was a big fire place fire in the hall, and this morning there was a little steam heat to take the chill off the house. The weather has been beautifully cool for two days, with the mountains as clear as they could be. The clouds tonight look suggestive. Rain is very much needed, but I'm glad there have been clear days.
I had two cards from you today, and Miss Smith's letter inclosing others. It was good to hear that you are all right. The hot weather must have let up a little, I'm sure, so you'll be more comfortable.
Much love to you,
Abby
