Sunday night

Dear Mamma:-

We have been having a fine trip so far. I thought I might start a note to you from here last night, but mails are few. So far we are doing things just as we planned except that we went up a different mountain in Sandwich. I have sent you three postals from different places but don't remember just what I said.

Wednesday we got to Mrs. Johnson's just in time to have baths all around before supper. She seems fairly well, though there are many things she can't do. She can walk out in the garden with a cane, and can sit around on a box and pull a few weeds, but she really uses her right hand no more than you do. She can't pick up things with it at all. I hope she will get able to walk farther later. Her house is lovely. Jane Blood was there but no nurse. One had gone, and her successor is to come just about now. A girl from the village was helping Jane and also helping Mrs. Johnson dress &c.

We started Thursday morning and walked over the hills to Ashland, with lovely views all along, and lots of wild strawberries. They are so good. We had dinner at a hotel in Ashland and took the boat across Squam Lake - a lovely ride. We had two little showers with lovely rainbows. Our ponchos are very useful indeed for we can get them on in a very short time and be all under cover. The walk up to Centre sandwich was beset by many mosquitoes but we survived. Our house in Centre Sandwich was fine for we had a whole cottage to ourselves. It was near a boarding house and not rented until July 1 so Mrs. Marston put us down there. We had more room than I've seen since we were at Amherst - a bath room included. The food was excellent too.

Friday we went up Mount Israel and it was a perfect mountain day with splendid views. The trail was fairly good and we could see lots of mountains from the top. There was a fire warden up there, a pleasant boy who stays in a little log cabin close to the top.

Yesterday we walked over here stopping at noon to call on Mr. Hoag where we stayed in 1908. The place is just as when we were there, Mr. Hoag very slow. They had a dog who evidently thought we were real tramps and I felt sure he would eat us up before Mr. Hoag could get around to call him off, but we escaped. It was fun to go over the roads we went over in 1908 - and they have changed very little.

Today we climbed Whiteface and were lucky not to get caught in bad showers. But we didn't and had a fine walk and fine views. Miss Smith, Miss Purington and I went up in 1908 and I was so glad to go again. The view is such a wide and lovely one.

Oh, the boy who was running the boat on Squam Lake pointed out Dr. Richardson's camp but we didn't stop there.

All our mail came safely and we were glad to see it.

Much love to you,
Abby

Monday morning: It is a rainy day but we shall find things to do. There is a tea-room next door and I found a little stand for postcards which I am sending you to use for those you keep up a little while. [sic]
