Dear Cousin Emma

I want to send you a word of sympathy, from my far away home.

Mrs Moore [?] send me a paper with a notice of Mr Turner's death. You have lost a kind and loving husband and Abbie a loving father. You will miss him very much but it will not be very very long for us, before we go to join our loved ones we have more there than we have here.

Mattie Wilkins wrote me last Winter that your sister Abbie had gone home, and we saw in the papers of Charlie's sad death.

And since I came out here Uncle Leander, Aunt May and Aunt Eliza here all passed on. Uncle Warner is left alone in the old home, it would be a sad place to go back to.

This is my second Winter in California. I like, we have a pleasant home and I think that John enjoys having a home it is on an Island, we can see water both sides of us the ocean one side, San Pedro bay on the other and a mile from here the Island ends in the ocean.

It is a buisy [sic] place, there are two [?] lumber yards and mills, and vesels [sic] bring in lumber and grain from the north and it is loaded on the cars here.

John is inspector here he has to see that it is all loaded right, before it can go cut, we are twenty seven miles from Los Angeles, there four trains a day to the city.

Emma Radcliffe's daughter lives in Los Angeles, she is married and has a new home there, she comes down to see me visits often and if I want to do any [...]s she always goes with me, she is my eyes. I cannot see or read any, or sew, but I do not think they are any worse than when I came out here[.]

How are you? I hope no worse [?], if you can see to write I should like to hear from you and know what you do. I can be in hopes that you can be with Abbie. I suppose that she is still teaching.

I hope that you can read this, and excuse all mistakes as I cannot see to read it and it all runs together, but I did want to let you know that I often think of you.

I send much love and sympathy to you [and Abbie [?]]

Your aff cousin
