A Letter Written on Oct 13, 1918

Sunday Afternoon

Dearest Bubkins,

I was just as glad as could be to receive your letter this past week.

Wasn't that a faux pas that I made not about the uniforms? Never mind sooner or later you'll "git" one and what difference does it make anyhow? Doesn't change the person inside unless - to make 'em puffed up a little bit. What do you think about it?

I'm writing amidst various & sundry emotions! You know the news about the un-substantiated German note reached us this morning. Some soldiers drove frantically about the campus in an auto shouting at the top of their lungs "The wars ended, the wars ended." at about 5.30 A.M. Naturally, I hopped out of bed & over to the window to hear what the trouble was. In less than half an hour the whole college was up & out singing all sorts of patriotic songs in front of President Woolley's door. She & John R. Mott, who preached here today, stood by the porch quite overcome with emotion. You know Bub dear, it simply made me boil. There was that huge group of supposedly "America's finest type of womanhood" standing there making a demonstration for a cause which noone knows anything about as yet! Talk about your mob psychology - well, this is a fine demonstration! Peace sure is far from being declared just now. If peace were declared my sakes I should think for the sake of those who have died we would feel at least reverential instead of hilarious. Now that I've given vent to my feelings how do you feel about it?

This past week I just heard of the death of four of my friends at home with the influenza and one fellow drowned who was a sailor. It sure does bring the war right home. I say war in reference to the influenza because I firmly believe that the germs were brought into the country by german Agents!! [sic]

Bubkins, do you be careful and don't get the bug - For it is certainly no joke. See how I've adopted your signature. I like it.

By the way, dear, if you go into the navy will you go just as a sailor or in some medical capacity. (I do not even know if this is possible but I'm here showing my ignorance again!!) Well, Bubby dear, you spoke about "going on the job again" I have to go to a college sing now so must quit.

All my love, dearest from,
Fran.
