Friday Evening
Dear Patty:
See, it was nice to hear your voice again. There were still a lot of things I wanted to ask you about college but I guess they'll have to wait until you get home at Thanksgiving and then you'll have to give a lecture on college life and your doings.
Did you get your check in time? Dad didn't want to send it special delivery he was afraid they wouldn't find the name for all the stamps. Imagine 20¢ for special delivery now.
Tuesday night I went to Class meeting at the Wiest's and had hot pumpkin pie.
We have been having Hallowe'en tricks & treats all week. You'll probably get the remainder of the suckers if we don't give them all out. Do you celebrate Hallowe'en up there?
Wednesday night we went to see the Hallowe'en parade and waited an hour in front of the Goodwill for the parade to arrive. There was a lot of nice floats, more than usual Also some good individual entries. It was lacking the Brotherly Love Band which we missed.
Thursday night we made our usual pilgrimage to the A & P. Bought some chocolate drops for your cookies which I guess Grandma will make on Sunday. Getting hungry? We also went to a movie to see Passion to use the last passes. Dad said not to accept anymore as they have such punk pictures. There were about 6 people in the balcony again.
We did a little shopping downtown before we came home tonight. I bought a black hat, (as you have mine) and dad bought shoes & hat. He also bought a charcoal sport coat & gray pants this week. He'll be all dressed up when you see him next.
It's getting colder here by the day.
How did you make out with your French quiz? Have you given up the idea of going abroad in your junior year? I think until the end of the year you'll like French much better and maybe change your mind again. Don't depend on making a living by just writing, it's a little rough going.
I believe you better listen to Dad and not plan to take in a show at New York at Thanksgiving as the trains will be jammed and late.
You girls much have made some funny looking firemen, wasn't it a bit chilly out with just a gym suit on?
We've been getting quite a bit of literature on Life magazine. Would you like to give it to daddy for Xmas this year, he's about the only one that looks at it. You could get it thru your account. with Curtis.
Grandma just called and said she was asked to go to Baltimore for dinner Sunday, so you'll probably have to wait a day or two longer for your cookies. She sure gets around. I wanted to give her a permanent this Sunday but I guess that will also have to wait. How does yours look? Will you have to have one at Thanksgiving or can it wait until Xmas?
Remember if you bring someone along for Thanksgiving they'll have to sleep on the hard bed so you better warn them in advance. We still haven't got drapes for the rooms as yet. Just can't find what we need. I had hoped to have it fixed up until you came home.
Everyone's okay here. By the way Aunt Helen & Ann are coming to York for one day this weekend.
Aunt Sis in Fort Wayne died. She was in her 80's or 90's. Old age.
Well I guess that's all for this time.
Love
Mother[on a separate sheet]
Dear Pat,
Here are some checks for some more of the money Mother is holding for you. [no longer with the letter] To avoid having the date stale when you want to cash them, I have left the date blank. When you want to cash one fill in a date a few days before the date you cash it. You'll probably need the $20 one for traveling expenses at Thanksgiving. Better put in the dates with your typewriter,
Love,
Dad
