A Letter Written on Oct 14, 1954

Thur. Night

Hi Honey:

How's tricks?

Monday was very uneventful except that I went to our first Ceramic meeting. Finished the plate that I started last year and made a group of leaf ash trays for the table.

Tuesday we went to Phila which was also a flop. maybe I wasn't in the humor to shop. Couldn't find anything I wanted. I bought myself a blouse and couldn't try it on, so I guess you'll fall heir to it as its [sic] a little snug in the arms. It's the shade of green like the shoes I bought in N.Y. I also bought an umbrella for work for 1.00. Also bought you a horsehair slip. And that was that. Oh, dad bought another orlon shirt like the one he got last year.

Last night a group of us Lady Aiders started to clean the church kitchen. Oh what a mess. We're only about 1/3 finished. I was so tired I could hardly sleep.

Tonight we took Grandma & Aunt Bertie to the A. & P.

Oh I bought you two more boxes of pop corn in Phila. and when we got home, here they have them here in Bears & Wiest. It seems you have to shake the pan quite a lot after it starts popping for best results. I don't believe you made yours right the first time.

We sent your packages of cakes today that Grandma made. I hope they arrive before they get stale.

It looks like the present hurricane might strike here tomorrow. So I guess we're in for some bad weather. It's almost at N.Y. now.

Okay toots I won't worry if we don't hear from you for a week, but don't make it any longer than that. It's okay if you either write to Grandma or us, as we exchange letters anyway.

I'm glad to hear your studies are coming along fine and keep up the good work in physics.

Say aren't you going in for things pretty strong, inviting two boys for the same things. Expenses will be pretty high to pay for both, their expenses at the inn. Maybe one of them won't accept. You should have asked Phil, he might have accepted.

Daddy thinks you plan to come into N.Y. by car on Thanksgiving is that right or are you going to take the train. Don't make Jane wait for you as she probably would like to get home earlier than you can make it.

You know I thought maybe you'd skip breakfast. Don't tell me they just have toast and coffee for breakfast and that you can't get bacon & eggs or pancakes. I thought you always went for those things.

It has been like summer here all this week, temperature going up to the high eightie's. [sic] I've been noting though that your temperatures are cooler up there.

Daddy marked your bike. He doesn't remember where but I think he put it under one of the fenders the frame. Your name is And under your saddle. The name is put on adhesive tape. You might look maybe you're riding the wrong bike.

The apples were from Al's and I think they're good too. Don't drink too much coffee, you know, "coffee nerves".

Your pictures are quite interesting I suppose they're all Freshmen.

You better watch out for mice if you have too much food around, this time of year they come in. You didn't have to buy a four year's supply of sugar at one time.

I notice you're going to buy a beer mug, just for decorative purposes only I hope or for water. How about it?

I guess this will be all for now, be good and take care of yourself.

Love
Mother.

Everyone okay here. We all had flu shots today at Gazette
