A Letter Written on Feb 3, 1958

Dear Pat,

By now you know me well enough to realize how slow I am to get around to writing, so I won't waste time on silly excuses. However, I am curious about a lot of things, and so I decided to write right away.

To explain a little - I didn't call you in Philly because I didn't wake up until almost noon (it was 5 A. M. by the time we'd had breakfast and gone to bed), and Mrs. Corson had breakfast waiting. You had said you were leaving at about 1 o'clock, so I kicked myself once or twice and then just hoped you wouldn't be too put out with my forgetfulness.

Win Smith and I left Corson's lovely old home about 2 and did some sightseeing - Independance [sic] Hall and the like - then caught a train around 4:30. I arrived in New York, had dinner at Bob's (my room-mate) and went off to another party, without a date of course. Was I mad because I goofed on asking you up to N.Y. I spent most of the evening drinking Scotch and talking - first with Sam, Bob's best pal (who was also dateless), then with a girl who had a date somewhere, I think. You must think I'm in the habit of doing that, after what happened at Kleeb's party. But really - that girl cornered me and I could hardly get away without being rude. Besides, we were talking about you.

Sometime I'll explain that last statement, but right now it's rather hard, since I'm not sure about a few things - e.g. just how we stand right now. Do you hate me?

Anyway, I'm awfully glad you came to Philly, and I hope we can have another evening just as much fun as that one sometime soon. I had a marvelous time - and you seemed to be, too (but I didn't get a hangover 'till after two more nights of living it up - & then wow! what a head!). Now we're even - you at Kleeb's and me at winter house party. But you didn't fall asleep for 3 hours.

I hope your exams went all right, and that you had a nice vacation. I went to New York for 2 days during ours - and got a cold. I just got out of the infirmary after missing classes Thursday and Friday.

Write me soon, dear - I may call you this week if I don't have too much studying to do over this coming week-end, since I'd love to see you soon if possible (even if it's just for an afternoon). The following weekend of the 15th I have a Law School Admissions Test to take - but are you free the one after that? Or when?

Forgive this crazy mixed-up letter - it's so typical of me not to be able to express what I mean. Be good and study hard -

Love,
Don
