A Letter Written around Apr 21, 1955

Dear Pat,

Well? What's with you? Dead or sumpin'? Oh well, I'll forgive you.

I've been making out my schedule for next year, and first semester looks wonderful. The Drama department has combined about 5 of its courses into a Drama Workshop 3 times a week, 4 hours a session. Seems impossible, but there it is. I'm taking, that, if I can get Dolph's signature and Prof. Greet's, and I don't see why I can't. The course comprises writing for the stage, design, acting, history of the theatre, and so forth. It should be fascinating.

Then I'm taking Victorian Prose with Prof. Robertson, Botany (heaven forbid), French (if I don't pass the exit), and English History.

I'm trying to decide what field of English I'll major in eventually, and I've narrowed it down to Victorian Literature or Drama. They both fascinate me so that I can't chose among between them.

If you want to read some really weird and fascinating poetry, read Swinburne, we're reading him now in Vic. Poetry, and speaking of poetry, thank you ten million times for the wonderful Peter. He's enchanting. My favorite is "To Be Sung", and then there's "Bad News from Ratisbon to Browning" which is one of the funniest poems I've ever read. And "A Gnarled Old Crab-Apple Tree answers Joyce Kilmer" is so beautifully wicket. Sometimes he's like Nash in the way he strings words together, and some times he writes just plain magnificently. I'm sending you a check for the amount [no longer with the letter], and thank y'all again.

(We're discussing To the Lighthouse now in English class and much as I liked the book, this discussion is slowly driving me batty)

I've been playing tennis like mad lately, and I'm beginning to play at last, rather than just hitting the ball around. Such muscles I'll have by summer!

Any prospects of a summer job for you? Will you go to Allenberry, think you? And what are we going to get our Witch for her birthday? I got a real crazy card, so if you want to get her another one, go right ahead. This one's real witchy - a Chas. Addams dame on the front, saying "Happy Birthday, Pet!" Inside: "I hope you line [sic] Another 75 years!" Charming, eh what? Give me some ideas present-wise. One thing we must get her is a treasure ball. She loved the ones I got the boys.

Love,
Jane

P.S.
Am sitting here waiting for Gustavus Adolphus to put in an appearance and give me his "reccomendation" [sic], as they say on the course sheet. These benches are so blasted hard.

Interesting fact #2: Three other girls and I were just locked out of French class. Dr. Czoniger has the unpleasant habit of locking the classroom door promptly at 11:00, making it rather difficult for us who have to trot all the way from 4 Barnard. We knocked politely once or twice, then went (with our gander up, as Joanie say[s], bless her little pointed) to complain to Mrs. Altschul, our class advisor. She is rather non compus [sic] at times, but nice enough. Lord knows what'll happen now. I like Dr. C, but there is a limit - !
