A Letter Written on Apr 30, 1955

Saturday

Dear Pat,

I have been studying your tentative schedule for junior and senior years. I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but aren't you spreading yourself out a little thin? You want to carry Math to an advanced course. You want to cary Art to Advanced Painting. English Lit to Lit Criticism. Theatre Arts to Advanced Playwriting, etc.

Also, I believe you're a little short on prerequisites. Art 325f requires 218s, which you skipped. English 302s requires 301f (unless "per I," and what makes you think "ole Fibber" will let you get away with it?)

I am interested in knowing the reason for the sudden yen for Math. I am also wondering if your junior year won't be too heavy on lab courses. The Art, alone, is 8 studio hours, The others are sort of hidden lab courses, such as Radio and the production of your English tragedy or comedy.

I agree you need some Educational courses but how come the intermediate courses are all first semester and the advanced courses second semester? Looks like the Navy must be running that school.

I gather that you intend to major in English Composition. Your schedule shows plenty of advanced courses in your major but what do you consider the 3 hours of advanced related work outside the major department? I don't see how math is related. Perhaps Art is related but then you must have that pre-rec.

I know this sounds rather negative but I really intend it to be constructive. Don't bother to write about it. We can discuss it next Saturday. I don't suppose we can talk to your advisor on Parents Day. That probably would be considered incompatible with the spirit of the festivities. See if you can fix it up, anyway.

We received your long (and long delayed) letter yesterday. I am not quite clear where your Physics class is held. Is that the brand new bldg. or isn't that completed yet? I see your home for next year is on the wrong side of the tracks (too close to Prexy's house). Anyway, it's better than commuting from Mandelle.

Must you buy shirts to paint in. Don't we have enough old shirts around? I have two that are just about to be retired to pasture. Surely, you must have some too.

See you soon.

Love,
Dad
