Friday Noon
Dear Patty:
How [is] the cold & throat coming. Let me know daily if only a card. Have you been to the infirmary as yet. Please go and get some medication.
I'm at the Hospital, just sitting here with Grandma. We couldn't get a nurse for her this morning. just as well as she doesn't need one. The only thing I have to do is help her out of bed when she has to go to the toilet or something. You know the student nurses are so slow in coming and they're short of help. Grandma is fine, she hasn't had a pain as yet. This morning I asked the doctor if she [is] really bad on operation and he said yes. He said she's doing fine and will be home in a few days, even before they take the stitches out. You know you can't hold Grandma down. She [is] to sit up today and she's been out of bed to go to the toilet several times and doesn't seem to mind it a bit. She gets out of bed before you can help her right. After today, she'll be on her own, without any help from the nurses of course[.] I'll be here Saturday & Sun. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she came home Sunday or Monday. She wants to write to you I don't know if it will be today or not.
You know she had this sore on her breast around the nipple, well it would not heal and the past several months it seems to have spread somewhat, so Dr. Landes sent her to Dr Gemmill and Monday night he told her she should have it off, so yesterday was the day. It was annoying as she always had to wear something over it and it itched so and was oozing so it began to get on her nerves, she was afraid it might create an odor while she was working and you know - fastidious grandma. She would have had something done before if Dr. Landes would have said so. Mildred Durkee was with her before and after the operation, until around three. I think that was real nice of her as it was her day off from work.
Grandma didn't like it much that we told you about it last night, but she's fine and rearing to go, and talking about making you another cream chocolate cake.
Have you finished your English paper yet. Take care of yourself over the week-end and don't get over-heated or maybe you won't get to go to the dance next week-end.
How are you and Fitch making out? Did he call you back?
Your marks are okay. I know you have been working hard and doing the best you can. It's not like High School, you have tuffer [sic] competition to back up to. Just do the best you can. Just don't try to do too many extra things or maybe then they might kick. I don't know if your marks will have anything to do with your getting tuition or not. Do you know?
You have something there when you said that the "Y" job might isolate you and that's true, you'd be away from home for another 6 weeks. And then again I don't know what sleeping facilities they have whether its [sic] tents or not, and if you have a rainy season look out. There are all kind[s] of angles to consider, so think it over good. I'd put in quite a few applications and pick out the best one.
Grandma [is] eating her dinner now. here's what she has. clam chowder, crackers, bread, tea, tomatoes[,] mashed potatoes and some kind of meat with gravy. Not bad eh!
I guess I'll close now as I [am] going back to work as soon as Grandma is finished dinner.
NOW TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
Love,
Mother.Drop me a card & tell me how you are.
