Tues. Feb 9
Dear Sioux Sue and Larry,
To the one who gets the original of this letter and finds the "Dear..." typed twice - the one on top didn't go thru on the carbon. [Sue Ellen got the carbon copy]
Mommy wrote you long letters Sunday. From now on she probably won't be able to write as often or an [sic] long because this course she is taking at State requires a lot of reading. It look s [sic] like a hectic time around here for several months.
Ray and Rosella flew to Florida Monday p.m. Arthur, Brenda and the Bergs are there. Ray will come back a week from Thursday.
Grandpa is here and very lonesome. He spends all day in the house alone. This Friday I'm not going to work, but will drive to Amsterdam, leave Grandpa in the store, and go to Johnstown to have the rug fixed in the rear of the Buick. They have a new rug for us. I don't know whether we'll stay in Amsterdam all day or not. Mommy doesn't work Friday and Rose will be here to clean. So it's a good day to get Grandpa out of the house and change his scenery after a whole week in the house.
There is nothing new at the VA. We have not heard anything since the message of last Friday to "cease and desist". In the news broadcast today we heard Pres. Johnson say that they were going to close the selected hospitals in spite of Congressional opposition. He didn't say anything about the Regional RO. I had an interview late this afternoon with the Administrative Officer at the New York State Department of Law. He called me in as a result of a letter he had received from Guy Graves, Schenectady County Republican Chairman. He said that he doesn't have anything now, but wants me to file a complete personal history, with complete emphasis on the legal experience. Then he wants me to bring it to him again. I will wait until the official announcement of the VA closing, as there is nothing much I can do until I know exactly when I can retire. I never thought I'd "retire" at such an early age!
(I interrupted this letter as we just phoned Larry to find out why we hadn't heard from him in 10 days.)
Mommy is downstairs now clipping the newspapers. Grandpa just watched a TV show and is also sitting in the living room. We have the TV in Larry's bedroom so Grandpa can watch it there.
I went to work at 7 this morning so that I could
lpick up an hour which I took off at 3:30/ [sic] I'll go in tomorrow at 7 and again Thurs. so I can get 2 hours more compensatory time. When I take Friday I'll be charged with only 4 hours annual leave because I will have accrued 4 hours compensatory.Don Gillespie, one of our senior adjudicators, got himself another job and has left already. He only had 10 years service and doesn't want to go to NY City. So he quit
eHe'll be an administrative assistant to the president of Albany Business College. It will pay $2000 less than he has been receiving at VA, but he's unmarried, and happy to change jobs. I hope to see him from time to time. There's not much more news to write. I've been home both last night and tonight. Wed. is K and bowling. Thursday night I have a Kiwanis finance committee meeting to attend. Friday I expect to go to Johnstown and Amst. And that about covers the week.
Love from
Daddy [Arnold J. Friedman]Mommy just reminded me that we didn't stay home last night - we went to Troy to visit Aunt Daullie
